Update On Airport Tax
As of 1st of July 2009 travelling to and from Amsterdam airport will be cheaper. The new airport tax, which the government had introduced last year, will be cut from this date. Passengers flying within Europe will save 11,25 euro and passengers on intercontinental flights will save 45,00 euro.

Schiphol: Ups And Downs
Schiphol is easily reached by public transport and very open. Terminals can be quite a hike, so leave enough time. Signs tell you how far you can expect to walk, so just pay attention. The best feature of this airport is the free museum on the Boulevard. It's affiliated with the Rijksmuseum and usually offers nice paintings and other artwork. Spotting Dutch masters is a very good way of spending anywhere between 30 and 60 minutes. On the downside are the new tax regulations. Every person departing from AMS (including transfer passengers) need to pay 11.25 euro for flights within Europe and 45 euro for intercontinental flights. It has caused many Dutch people living close to the border to avoid Schiphol and fly from Belgium or Germany.

Schiphol Airport
Truly the best airport I've been so far!! It's so big that I think the subway itself makes 2 stops while in airport area!!

Been there around 6-7 years ago connecting from Poland to Athens. Had 5 hours to spend in the city, but all I can remember is the airport!

Not to mention that I nearly missed my flight due to wanting something to drink, lost the gate going back and didn't find it until 10 minutes later (and a little time before gate closed) ! What an experience!

Ams Airport
Lovely airport with all conveniences and amenities. The KLM lounges are awesome, but you do need to be a member to take advantage. One problem, I arrived at the lounge (5:55am) before it opened for the day. I was surprised that the lounges are not open 24/7 as passengers are traveling round the clock.

Nice, Clean Airport
Had a connection here a few times in the past. AMS is a nice, clean airport with friendly staff. Easy to navigate and it's full of conveniences, like shops, rest rooms and even a hotel inside.
The only issue is, this terminal/s is too big and it can take a while to get from one gate to the next and sometimes the gate changes a few minutes before the scheduled flight time. This can mean another 20 minutes or more walking or running to the other gate. If you do not speak English/French or German, this can be a nightmare and by the time you realize the gate changed, you missed your connection.
