My country of origin has nothing to do with my selection of Schiphol easily being in the top 5 international airports. All airports have their peculiarities. When you consider efficiency, security, hospitality, and how clean it is, aren't those the things the seasoned traveller is looking for? They even have 'day rooms' for those who want to take a nap for a couple of hours. Try finding this at your local airport if you've got a long layover, or you are not feeling so well. You can make a speedier exit if you have "Nothing to Declare", be the first at the rental counter or whatever. And as to the comments about "subways" I respectfully suggest that you rethink the definition. You won't find any subways in the Netherlands (Not Holland, which is a province within the NL!!) I forget the exact figure but AMS is well below sea level by 10's of metres. The Dutch have a very efficient transit system. Yes you can take a train directly to the central station in Amsterdam which will connect you to any destination within the country, or international destinations. There are also specially marked trains that are dedicated to taking passengers to and from AMS - they even take care of your luggage. The only thing they miss is a place where you can get croquettes !!

There should be no doubt that AMS Schiphol is by far the best airport in Europe and one of the best in the world.

I think Lady Abigail has not done a lot of travelling in her life... No offense, but having seen at least 30 different airports during my travelling - I think it is safe to say that Schiphol is up there with the very best! Yes, there is no subway, but there is a train every 10 minutes that will take you into the center of Amsterdam, where you have the choice out of lots of different means of (very reliable!) public transportation. Sign-posting in the airport is very clear, and it is no problem having to hike from one gate to the other as there is plenty to see, eat and do!

I doubt Mr Daniel Mano has ever been to Amsterdam airport. There's no subway stop anywhere near Amsterdam airport. Just regular trains, and busses. And if you have to go from one end of the terminal to the other, you'll just have to hike. No shuttles.

As of 1st of July 2009 travelling to and from Amsterdam airport will be cheaper. The new airport tax, which the government had introduced last year, will be cut from this date. Passengers flying within Europe will save 11,25 euro and passengers on intercontinental flights will save 45,00 euro.
