I can’t find anything on the webpage regarding transportation to Arusha from the airport. Is there a shuttle service ?
Security
It’s pretty easy to bribe your way into any area of the airport and the fire brigades water tanks usually lack water. Often power gets cut and staff have to run to the generator to get the lights on again.. It’s controversial that KLM is landing there.
Reply To Mrs Julie M - Re: Poor Service
The experience you had at the airport was very unfortunate. However, your claims that they do not have good security and tons of weapons/illegal substances being brought through this airport is not true. Bear in mind that if the security was not up to acceptable standards it wouldn’t be an internationally recognized airport and it wouldn’t have had the title of being the main hub to the main national wildlife int the northern circuit of Tanzania. The airport was recently upgraded and the security is of the highest standard bearing in mind the decision of KLM to introduce daily late night flights to Kilimanjaro directly from Amsterdam. I assure you the security in Kilimanjaro international airport is one of the toughest if not the toughest to go through in modern airports. Also sniffing dogs are of plenty in the luggage loading area before the luggage gets in or out of the airport. All I want to say is that we are all very sorry of your experience at the airport and also that it is nothing that you have claimed it is.
Poor Service
I had a horrible experience flying out of JRO in late December of 2008. It was the last flight of the night, and upon arrival, an airport staff asked me to step away immediately after I entered the airport and locked the door saying "all flights are closed". After walking around the airport and knocking on all doors and windows (being ignored by all staff), I finally talked to a random Precision Air representative who said they were closing the airport early that night and boarded the flight early. I was 1.5 hours early. 16 other people missed their flight that night. Worst of all is that there was only one KLM representative there that night at the office who did not speak English and said I had to wait for that flight to leave before I can speak to anyone. I understand this might not be the airport’s fault in general, but closing an airport early does not seem logical. They do not have good security. I’ve heard of tons of weapons/illegal substances being brought through this airport.
Kilimanjaro International Airport
The real gateway to East Africa’s fabled landscapes and wildlife, Africa’s highest mountain Kilimanjaro and "The Geneva of Africa" – Arusha, which is home of the East African Community Headquarters. Kilimanjaro International Airport offers all the services you would expect to find at any major airport, handled with pleasantly surprising friendliness and professionalism. The airport estate extends to 110 sq kms, a significant proportion of which has been zoned for planned, environmentally sensitive, development. The airport was privatised in 1998 and is operated by KADCO, a private limited company with shares held by the Government of Tanzania, InterConsult (a private Tanzanian Civil Engineering company); Mott MacDonald Ltd from the UK and an Investment Bank from South African. It is quicker and easier to fly direct to the Game Reserves of Tanzania via Kilimanjaro than Nairobi.
Kilimanjaro international airport is now in a good condition after the latest renovation of the whole airport. From runway and to lounges and almost everywhere has been upgraded as an international airport.
