London Stansted Airport is located at Stansted Mountfitchet, Uttlesford in Essex. This is about 30 miles (48 km) to the northeast of Central London and less than a mile from the Hertfordshire border. Last year Stansted was responsible for flying 17,472,699 passengers, making them the fourth busiest airport in the UK.
Stansted was originally opened as an army airfield called RAF Stansted Mountfitchet in 1943 and was used by the RAF and the USAAF during the Second World War. It was from Stansted Airport that more than 600 allied aircrafts were led over to defend France’s beaches on D-Day.
Getting into the airport is easy via public transport or a Stansted Airport Taxi but if travelers prefer their own transport means there are some great airport parking options available at London Stansted airport.

Stanstead Customs
5 star airport; very good but when returning the queue for customs took just under 1 hour, very slow and this was at 12.30 am not happy will not use again.
Rif Raf!
I must be one of the "rif raf" as mentioned by another poster, I use STD a couple of times a year, mainly using Ryan-air to fly generally seamlessly to Dublin. I find STD to be a friendly, clean and efficient airport. I do not like flying from Gatwick as it is too far away, and only use LHR for long haul. STD is my nearest international airport and an easy drive of 90 mins. It has a reasonable array of amenities; car parking is reasonably priced on site and I have never been delayed on an outward journey. If you want "snob" factor fly from Heathrow, otherwise Stansted works for me, give it a go for yourself and see!
Good
I used this airport recently and found it to be a pleasant surprise. Its clean, cool, spacious and well laid out. Everything is easy to find and it benefits from being all in one, admittedly large, building. It was a little crowded when I passed through, but that what airport do, get crowded. The only problem I can point out and its not really the Stanstead’s fault, is that its a long way out from London. Its at least an hours drive and 90 minutes on Public Transport. As airports go this is a good one giving a good experience. No problems at all here.
Stansted Airport
Many a time have I passed through this airport. The airport is beautiful with an eccentric design designed by Sir Norman Foster. The check-in hall is nice and airy all though sometimes busy as it is one of the busiest airports in England. The security is nice with the staff often opening up more check points if the queues get too long. The departure hall is good with a lot of things to shop for from Hamleys to Nike. The departures is airy and compared to Dublin and other airports nice. The gates are nice and roomy with there being a tram link provided to the European destinations but if you are flying domestically there is a separate bridge although quite long. The gates give you a splendid view of the apron. Staff are friendly and all in all the airport is fast and efficient.
Lost Luggage
My luggage had lost in the airport, I could get my luggage after 3 days (on my departure day). That is a bad memory for me…

Queues
A couple of years ago I would have given this airport 5 stars – if not more. Since then, budget airlines and the ‘rif-raf’ have moved in. Added to this the terrorist threat. The queues have got ridiculously long. After getting your boarding card, you have to queue an average of 45 minutes to get through security. And, this security is now costing more – with no increased security staff/x-ray machines.
Stansted Airport
Stansted is a low-cost dominated airport. The departure lounges are minimalistic but ideal for the purpose they serve. There is often a long waiting time for baggage reclaim due to the high utilisation of the airport by low-cost airlines. However, this airport is certainly ideal if you wish to have a cheap and quick journey to your destination.
I couldn’t get it at the stopover during the transfer from Jet2.com airline to Tway airline. transfer time was 2 hours and 20 minutes, so we could have had more than enough time to find our luggage. The Tway airline staff recommended that we get on the airplane first and receive our luggage later because the gate was closing within 5 minutes. can we find?
