Newark Airport is the busiest airport within the New York and New Jersey metropolitan areas with over 400,000 flights to and from the airport in 2012. In that same year the number of flights transported over 33 million passengers to their destinations all over the world.
Newark Liberty International Airport was first opened on the 1st October 1928 as Newark Metropolitan Airport making it the first major airport in the US. The name of the airport was later changed to Newark International Airport in 1970 and more recently (2002) became the Newark Liberty International Airport. The airport itself is around 15 miles (24 km) to the southwest from Midtown Manhattan, New York City.
