London Gatwick Airport is London and England’s second largest and busiest airport serving in excess of 35 million passengers per year to various destinations worldwide, trailing only to Heathrow Airport within the whole of UK.
Although Gatwick Airport is actually 30 miles (47.5 km) south of London it is often called London Gatwick or Gatwick Airport. Gatwick’s closest settlement is in fact the historic town of Crawley, West Sussex, which is just 3.1 miles (5 km) to the south of the airport. If you plan on driving to the airport you will find there are a number of Airport Parking Options available at the airport, or at least close by to Gatwick Airport.
Being outside of London, the surrounding towns of Gatwick Airport provide a lovely change from the busy London streets. The little town of Horsham is a beautiful retreat for those wanting to kill a few hours just relaxing, having a meal or a drink in a more peaceful environment.

General
The first impact when arriving from Gatwick Express from London was that the signaling is not as abundant as one should expect. The check-in desks are not clearly signed and I had to ask for the airline I wanted. Waiting rooms for gates are dark and gloomy (at least the one from where my Ryanair flight for Dublin would depart). Although spacious, the shops/restaurants area is a bit confusing. Staff, however was quite nice. The flight was delayed and again the information system proved not to be much efficient as the electronic boards are oddly scattered.
Kind Of OK
Quite spacious departures area. The signage to the gates could do with improvement, and the catering…. Travelling out from LGW on a Tuesday morning (about 08:30), I had about 45 minutes from getting through security to boarding time. Orange Juice and a coffee seemed a good idea. Not a hope! Ridiculous queues at every catering outlet. Even tried Boots and WH Smiths for an OJ carton to take away. Couldn’t even see the end of the queue in WHS! Obviously a victim of its own success in attracting passengers, the facilities haven’t caught up. Take a picnic!
Gatwick
Clean, lively, cool airport. Great selection of shops and different types of food available even sushi!
Gatwick
Liked it, nice and clean cool. The staff need a lesson in friendliness but acceptable, just. The Gatwick express into London is really good, get your ticket ON THE TRAIN. A very acceptable, but far from perfect alternative to that hell on Earth, also called Heathrow.
Useful Alternative To Heathrow
A good airport for getting in/out of London, none of the congestion/delays that so often occur at LHR. Don’t use the Gatwick Express – use one of the commuter trains which stop at East Croydon, they only take 5 minutes longer and they are quite a lot cheaper.
Restaurant
Food, as in most airports, is rather predictable. If you have an opportunity to leave the airport, you could pop in to the small town of Horley (1 mile from the North Terminal). There’s a lovely little restaurant called Planet Sweet (an arts cafe, so they also sell small pieces of local art).
General
I travel through Gatwick quite often and have grown very fond of it. There are two hotels now connected to the South and North concourse for convenience. Short taxi to numerous pubs and eateries nearby and the Gatwick Express runs from the terminal non-stop to Victoria station for big city life. Less hassles than giant Heathrow with all the amenities!
Facilities
Had to transfer from Heathrow to Gatwick on my way from Hong Kong to Manchester. One thing evident about Gatwick North Terminal is definitely the shortage of toilets. There were queues for the cubicles each time I went to the Gents. I had breakfast at Garfunkel’s, which was good, but for £8 for breakfast, toast and tea I do not expect to have to eat it with PLASTIC cutlery.
Great airport, sadly some attractions can only be found at Gatwick South and I usually travel from Gatwick North but other than short delays and a busy duty free area (pretty standard for major London airports) I’m always very happy to travel from this airport.
