In 1939, the region’s first airport, known as Raleigh’s Municipal Airport, was opened near to where the current airport is nowadays. Only ten years later, it was decided that a replacement airport would be built in a more convenient place, and in 1943 Raleigh–Durham International Airport was built. Since then the airport has had an average of 9M passengers per year, serving around 350 operations per day and offering 38 direct flights both to national and international destinations.
