I just met an incredible man who, as an eight year old in 1938, was paid $3 a week to fetch the air mail “bullets” from the Splane Airport!
History
Splane was opened as the municipal airport in 1932. The 2600 foot runway was paved in approximately 1936. It served the area until the 1960’s when it closed. The nearby FKL field became the air carrier airport for the region.
In my genealogy research, I’m attempting to find location of F.M.Carter’s (1853-1929) farm. Obituary reads “Owner of Airport Farm Succumbs-Franklin Pa., Oct 24.- Frank Merrick Carter, 76, owner of farm on which Oil City’s airport is located, died near Lamey Church.” Also, recorded deed, F.M. Carter to Minnie B. Splane, Dec 1927, 37.73 acres in Oakland. I now believe Splane is the airport and have info- Thanks to everyone who bring knowledge, photos & stories to sites like this one!
