Nice For The Fully Abled
Airport
Mr. B Wilson…FYI…the airport is undergoing a major modernization within a 10 year span. From the plans unveiled Kona International Airport will be unique in that it will incorporate all the necessities of a modern facility along with keeping it uniformed with the Island’s character. Like they say…the best is always saved for last.
Short Stay Recommended
This airport is so dilapidated…it must be an embarrassment to the State. Fortunately, it’s quite small and you can get in and out fast enough not to notice the rampant cockroaches and fetid bathrooms…much. Practically no amenities are provided and those that are (souvenir shop, refreshment stand with sour coffee and warm drinks) seem more like temporary kiosks.
In the developed world one of the few airports of its age, size and traffic volume without jet ways to the planes. This is in keeping with a desire to maintain an island feel to the place — which also means outdoor gate areas, outdoor baggage claim, and outdoor check-in. The only real problem are the crushing queues and long waits at check in and the absurd necessity to recheck your bag at a place far away from the point of check-in. It’s advisable to arrive very early if you are boarding a large aircraft or if it is a busy time (generally mid-morning to early afternoon seems the worst). The facility was not built to cope with the current volume of travel, even though it has lost many direct flights to/from Japan and the US mainland in recent years.
