Karoola Airport Reviews (4)
I was engaged by Touche Ross accountants of Rabaul to manage Karoola just before it was sold off by Trustees of Oz family owners to PNG Plantation Agency in1981n.
The drying and lighting on all of plantation was by 2 ex airforce Canberra (?) engines used on 12 hour shifts.
The airstrip was open but needed continual grass cutting.
I also grew up at Karoola Plantation and perhaps I might know you. You must be Glen George . My name is Peter Hatagen and My father use to work on the Plantation. My e-mail address is : Peter.hatagen@oktedi.com. Please contact me.
I have no photos but keep in touch and I will send you when I take some on my next break.
Peter.
The Building of Karoola Airstrip
My father, John George, built Karoola Airstrip when he was the plantation manager in the 60’s and 70’s. I lived on Karoola from 1964 to 1974. It was a great place to grow up and the airstrip was very hard work. It would be nice to see it now if someone could add a photo of it.
If you are Glen George please contact me on my e-mail address ( peter.hatagen@oktedi.com ). I grew up on Karoola Plantation and my father also worked there. I still live on the plantation with my siblings and family relatives.
The airport is now overgrown with trees after the Bougainville crisis. I will take some pictures and send to you.
Hope we can meet again some day.
Peter Hatagen
