Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport, also known as FLL, is an international airport located 21 miles North of Miami that served more than 23.5M passengers in 2012.
Formerly known as Merle Fogg Airport, it was opened on an abandoned golf course in 1929 and transformed into a military base. Commercial flights to Nassau began on the 2nd of June of 1953, and domestic flights started five years later.
Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport was affected by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Wilma during the 2005 hurricane season. While Katrina didn’t affect the airport that much, Wilma damaged the airport, which had to close 5 days.
In 2007 Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport started charging fees to all users, with a minimum charge of $10 for private aircrafts that land in the airport.
