Manapouri Airport Improvements
Runway length will be extended to 1800 metres from September 2007 with the completion of a new multi user terminal built by Air Fiordland. The airport was formerly owned by Mount Cook Airways and once had regular flights by HS.748 aircraft. These flights discontinued in the late Eighties. Manapouri airport is a natural gateway to the splendour of Fiordland and especially Milford Sound. The nearest township of reasonable size and facilities is Te Anau.
Runway now extended to 2000meters, A320 capable, and terminal facilities upgraded substantially. Now called Te Anau Manapouri Airport. At the moment air cruise operator, Pioneer, operates Convair 580s into Manapouri once a week for the convenience of tourists visiting Fiordland. Saves an all day trip by bus from Queenstown. Air New Zealand (Mt Cook Airline) is contemplating to return a daily Q300 service at this airport for the same reasons. This airport will also become a diversion point for Queenstown Airport when that airport is closed to adverse conditions.
