Abaiang Airport Reviews (1)
Abaiang airport is an airstrip cut from the coconut palms on a small atoll. There is one house made of concrete blocks with a tin roof which serves as the terminal. Seating is on the ground, wherever you feel like parking yourself. Next to this house is one made of local materials. A few years back a casa aircraft could be seen next to the terminus with one broken wing, but that has now been removed leaving the airstrip with no features to distinguish it from any of the other airstrips in the Republic of Kiribati. The agent for Air Kiribati, the only airline to land there, can be found in a nearby village and will turn up an hour or so before the flight is due. TO find out flight times listen to the local radio the night before or check with the agent the day before. There is no telephone or public toilets at the airstrip but what do you expect on an island with no electricity supply? Flights in and out over the lagoon are beautiful and as you land the smiles and waves of local children and adults are a heart warming sight. The airstrip is not smooth but the pilots and skilled in landing on them and it is usually a smooth affair. The airstrip itself stretches from lagoon to ocean and at either end there are beautiful beaches.
