Suggestion And Remedies
Bajpe Airport
When arrived at Bajpe, on Air India Express I was happy I could catch a direct international flight but as soon as I came towards the arrival hall (old) I was surprised to see such a small hall and only one baggage belt, 3 immigration checkpoints. So crowded I had to wait for half an hour to come to the nearest check point and my baggage was dumped in the corner which was surrounded by trolleys. I had to ask a service personnel to help me take the luggage. I was stupefied. The departure hall was okay. But all I can say is that it really does have to upgrade.
Upgradation Needed
Recently I visited Mangalore Airport, and I found that the airport doesn’t have enough sitting capacity in the departure loungue once you through security check. An international airport needs to have some sort of look so spread the carpet. On the day of travel it was raining heavily so I had to run to the plane; can’t they build a pavement system where traveler will be entered directly into the flight. The new runway is really good, make it B747 enable, outside the airport defiantly need some class hotel so tourist will find it easy on delay of flight, Airport roads should be laned properly. These are the minimum requirements that needs to be done.
New Runway At Bajpe Airport
A New runway is been built at the airport and plans are to make this airport international by June 06. The new runway is 1500 meters long (compared to the old one which is only 900 m) and will be able to handle AIRBUS-300 aircrafts. The runway will be operational by June 2006. The new Terminal will be next to the Deccan Club which is seen from Maravoor. Even the distance to the terminal will be cut short by 4-5 KM. With a little more modification even BOEING-747 will also be able to land.
About The Airport
Bajpe Airport in Mangalore, is a very important transit point to millions of people! A few years back it used to be the closest airport not just for the people of Coastal Karnataka but also to people from some parts of Kerala. Since these places have a lot of their people working abroad, the airport served them well, especially since it saved them a tedious journey by road or rail to Mumbai from where they had to catchtheir international flight. Sadly though, the airport is very small, and this restricts the number of flights that fly from/to here. It is also one of India’s most dangerous airports, as landing at Bajpe can be a tough job! I’m told that only the very best pilots are assigned on this route. This problem could have been easily solved by a simple expansion project.
Overall runway length which has now extended is not quite satisfactory. However, it is appreciated the risk on landing now has reduced compare to previous distance. Secondly, baggage arrival to belt after offload the plane seems quite long and damage factors is often found with most packages. It seems they are loaded to belt through underground available space, eventually it moves up and automatically placed on belts after big bang contacting provided border. Can avoid this bang which saves lot of fragile items being damaged. Taxi queues outside as soon as on arrival exgate should be avoided due to overcrowd. this would lead to traffic jams. Immigration counters are helpful and staffs are coordinate and helpful.
