Best and reliable
I used to fly to Bank in 1996/1997 in a Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander with Island Airways based in Madang. From memory (it’s now 2021.02.21), it was a downhill landing and uphill take off at 3953 feet above sea level at ISA+ 17, very slippery when wet and 472 metres long. I used to encourage the locals to grow bamboo at the end in case of overruns. Photo link to my Google Photos: https://photos.app.goo.gl/SpNa649HiRRS48e99 Double click for more information.
Hey Peter, I was the very first “official” pilot to fly in there in 1988, when I flew for Douglas Airways from Madang. (First pilot made an unofficial landing there, second pilot was the check pilot who approved me to fly there.) No problem taking off from there to go back to Madang to pick up the politicians for the airstrip opening but as for taking off from Bank in the BN2 with a full load of pax, I can totally relate to wanting bamboo for “overruns”!
