Site Of German Aviation Authorities
The regional airport sited in Braunschweig-Waggum was founded in 1935 under Nazi aviation minister Hermann Goering who had hunting premises at the city boundaries. Directly subjected to the airport are the Federal Aviation Authority (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt) and the Flight Accident Examination Authority as well as a research site of DLR - German Centre for Aviation and Space. The airport also serves the Volkswagen concern which is sited north in Wolfsburg, a city artificially constructed in between a number of villages in 1930s around the motor works.
