The older, other terminal is gone and the new, modern terminal is open. This is used for all airlines except Northwest and partners. DTW is my home airport and I travel a lot. (80k+ miles last year) The main NWA terminal is one of the best I've seen in the world. It may not be the biggest, but definitely one of the easiest to navigate. Although there are about 75 gates in the "A" concourse, all in one line, you can get from one end to the other in less than 10 minutes. Those circle and spoke airports could learn something from the model at DTW. And by the way, the guy who said Flint is nice, I agree with. But it is small and doesn't service many destinations. You have to go through a hub somewhere and many just take you to DTW.

I am from the Detroit area but this is an unbiased opinion having been to many air ports around the country and 1 in Europe. If you are flying Northwest it is especially nice. The terminal is huge, with overhead trains that are a breeze to use. Lots of good shops and restaurants to check out while you wait and very good service. I'm glad it is the Air Port I fly into and out of most often!

If you fly NW, this is the dream transit airport. You can easily make it from end to end in less than 10 minutes, thanks to the moving walkways or the unusually efficient trams. The airport also has a wonderful open and airy feel to it. There are three - count 'em, three - WorldClubs. The middle one has showers (and is also the busiest), and the end ones are smaller and less crowded, hence quieter. We often transit this en route to Europe, specifically because of the Westin that is attached to the terminal. This has it's own private TSA line, so you have practically zero wait. The bad part: for any other airline, DTW is old, dirty and cramped, and generally is miserable.

I love this airport! I have been through here several times in the last year as well as many many other airports. I have always been on a layover for Northwest. The overhead tram is great - not like all those others buried in concrete tubes. I LOVE the long arched tunnel with the light show. I avoid the moving sidewalks and just stroll up and down listening to my ipod. They have an A&W in this airport - slow service usually, but worth the wait. The parking czars outside are fun to watch - they actually do tow cars from the tow-away zone! Best for last: the Motown store. Enough said.

The security gates are limited and this will cause long waiting queues. Last departure there I had to wait ca. 45minutes to clear security and there was a line of 15 people only in front of me.
