Belbek Open?
According to my friend in Sevastopol, which is the closest town, Belbek, a former Soviet military airbase, is due to open for commercial flights this July (2007), with daily flights to/from Kiev (Borispol presumably). This is due to pressure from local business people, and the tourist industry alike, as the only access to the lovely Crimean coast from Alyshta to Yalta and Sevastopol is currently via Simferopol airport. This suffers from the double drawback of being a good 2 hours drive away, AND regularly becoming inaccessible in the winters, as there is a high and frequently snow-bound mountain pass between Simferopol and the south coast. The Mayor of Sevastopol (there are local elections on the horizon...) bowed to pressure and invested the required monies to open Belbek. I shall be one of the first visitors there (either on Aerosvit airlines, or as a private pilot), and I'll make sure to add a comment. Safe flights!
