Funchal Airport 1981
I visited the old Funchal airport in 1981. I was cabin crew and the captain invited me to sit in the flight deck jump seat for landing. I can still see it! You felt as if the wing was almost touching the hill on the one side as you approached. I could count the sheep in the field! I dreaded going back there again.

Funchal Airport
I experienced landing in Funchal since the 70’s with 727 and now with extended runway the landing became much smother. Due the slop, length and wind shear, perfect landings keep not be reachable by majority of foreign pilots, particularly the ones from charter flights. Line carriers such TAP give specific training to crews. Funchal is a typical holiday airport where the standard comfort and facilities from main airports in mainland are not available but can provide all basic requirements. If you are easily impressionable avoid eventual stress flying in a line flight. Enjoy your stay.

Madeira Approach
My goodness what a load of wooses in previous posts! You should have visited before the runway extension was built and particularly in the wet! Madeira has a great and interesting approach like the old Kai Tak (Hong Kong). It has a 15 degree upslope to the runway at the far end and plenty of wind shear. You don't want even commercial flying to be boring - live a little and visit glorious Madeira and don't worry about the much improved airport: there's plenty of runway! Don't hanker for Porto Santo airport: it's a long military runway with a straight in approach - yawn!

Good Airport
I flew into Funchal in September 2008 and it was a good experience both on arrival and departure. However, I had a problem with claiming my luggage which stays in Lisbon (I was flying with TAP from Munich via Lisbon) and it seems that it is a very common problem there, many other people had the same problem that day. But, it's not a fault of Funchal airport, the people there were very kind and they delivered the baggage to my hotel the same day.

I have flown to and from Funchal many times, I have never heard of an accident, in fact they just extended the runway.
