Surprisingly, in late 2007 air services have returned to Alexandra with Mainland Air operating a week day and Saturday Dunedin - Alexandra - Queenstown return service using the Piper Navajo airliner. A second service is operated mid afternoon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, as it has proved popular with Alexandra residents. Mainland started this service after winning a contract with Dunedin Hospital to move doctors and nurses to and from the outlying district hospitals in the region.

The small central Otago town of Alexandra redeveloped this airstrip in the 1960s from a paddock to a paved runway and small terminal building. This was done to allow SPANZ to fly commercial DC3 services. The terminal is still there with it's small tower mounted above the roofline. However passenger services have long gone. The last was in the early 1990s when portable landing lights were installed to allow evening flights by Mt Cook Airline with passengers bused through to Wanaka and Queenstown, as these commercial airports do not have night flight capabilities due to mountainous terrain.
Other airlines that have served are Pacifica Air flying the Metro III and Tranz Air flying the Piper Navajo.

It is still use by the RNZAF and the occasional charter flight, while also used during the bi-annual Warbirds Over Wanaka as an overflow airport.
