Magic!
The airport sits below the Remarkable Mountains and is located about 8 kms from Queenstown CBD the runway straddles a flat land mass with the Shotover river on it's north end and lake Wakatipu on the south.
ZQN is an international airport with daily flights to Australia during the winter snow season and on weekends during summer.
The terminal is being enlarged and there is room for six A320 type aircraft and it does cope with all gates in use well. When I visited there were four jet aircraft and two turbo-props. The jets were pushed back for departure. There are no Jet Ways so you get quite a shock when you dis-embark during winter. The terminal was being rebuilt but all facilities were in operation. Banking facilities and ATMs are avaliable. Cafe and bookshops were also avaliable.
ZQN has a large executive terminal for the Learjet set and MANY tourist flightseeing companies operate as well.
Being a major tourist area, the bus is king, landside and all the major car hire companies are present with campervans the major vehical type.
The veiw from the terminal is great and departing from Frankton southward over the lake is truly breathtaking, especially as you fly up to and over the Remarkable Skifields, while it feels like you are still on the ground.
Worth it on it's own and a great welcome to New Zealand's adventure capital.
