Compared with other Asian airports the facilities at tired and depressing Narita are appalling. After checking in, try finding a decent restaurant or bar to relax before your flight. There aren't any! Considering Narita is the main Japanese airport, it pales in comparison with the superb facilities at Hong Kong, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, even the far superior Kansai Airport. Narita is NOT a world-class airport and it is in dire need of a overhaul.

I have arrived twice to Narita and both times have been good experiences. Upon departure however, both times have offered some trouble. The first time I boarded the slow train to Narita, stopping at EVERY station. I eventually got off and took a taxi instead, but traffic jams made me miss the plane anyway. At the airport they helped me reserve a hotel for the night, Narita rest house which was just walking distance from the departure hall. They also gave me a phone number to the airline (KLM) where I could rebook my flight. The second time I made sure to take an early train and also the correct train, directly to the airport. The train was fully booked however, so there were no seats available. Also the train stopped for about an hour due to someone had been seen walking on the tracks. Finally arriving at the airport the plane was delayed anyway, so I didn't miss it this time.

I have flown to and through many different airports. None even come close to NRT. All airlines are in two groups, making it extremely easy to find the airline as well as walk from one to another. A traveller can get there for an international flight 1 hour before the flight departs, check-in and still have time to grab some food. Customer service at EVERY airline counter is excellent, the airport is well kept, the signs are easy to read/understand. Security is easy and fast. The fully automated baggage system is the most accurate, fastest baggage system in the world, and has a baggage misplacement/loss rate lower than any other large airport in the world. Immigration is fast and easy. Transportation from the airport is plentiful. There are multiple trains, buses, taxis, etc. to get pretty much anywhere in Japan. There is a large food court/shopping area before passing through security. There is food and shopping after passing through security as well. The baggage carts are free and easy to use...Next time you go to NRT, take a little time to walk through.

NRT is an excellent airport. I had a couple of 2 hour layovers there and was very comfortable.

They have lounge chairs to rest in, plenty of shops to browse, and the cleanest bathrooms I have ever seen in my life!

Well, I was there in September last year and I have to say that Narita Airport is the cleanest airport I have ever seen. Although it has years on its back, the staff keep all places clean! It smells very well and the bathrooms are unique (you should try these on arrival). Good experience!
