The airport has been long used for domestic flights, mostly to Tehran. During the last decade it has had some international flights to mostly the countries around Persian Gulf.
The building is nice but it is small for the current traffic which is nothing for a city with the population more than 2 millions and some 12~30 millions pilgrims every year! (Mashhad or Mashad is a holy Shiite city, and thus some passengers are merely pilgrims). There is some construction going on for the development of the airport. The reason that I ranked it 2** is mostly due to the poor level of the service offered in Iran. The building itself can be regarded as 3***.
