Sepigan Airport - Balikpapan, Indonesia
A very small, very antiquated, dirty airport. There is only one arrival and one departure gate. Be prepared on arrival to spend a lengthy time in customs. Usually everything in your luggage gets spread out over the counter and floor. It's not so much that they are looking for contraband but something to confiscate that appeals to them. On arrival search out the porters in the orange suits. Hand them a $10.00 U.S. currency and they will carry your bags all the way out the front door, most of the time bypassing customs. And everyone, and I mean everyone, has their hand in your pocket. On departure have all your paperwork in order or be prepared to pay a fine (in cash) to the immigration official who usually pockets the money.
