Tarakan Airport
I think there was a small shop with some drinks and snacks, but I'm not sure.
Near the airport there are some good hotels. We stayed at the Samkho hotel. It is on the left side from the airport to the town of Tarakan. For the money they ask, you can easily take the most luxurious room they have. Breakfast is not much but tastes good.
I Visited Airfield On 12/30/44
Another plane had ditched just before me and 12 men spent the next 44 hours waiting to be rescued by a PBY5 about 10 a.m. on the morning of Jan. 1, 1945.
One of our planes had been shot down just north of the airfield and all men were killed.
I often wonder if my B-25 still sits in the water near the beach on the eastern end of Tibi Island.
