Balaton
We wait hopefully for any flights from UK to fly into Sarmellek. It is a lovely little airport, always clean and all staff really helpful. Hungary is a super holiday destination, we have lived here for four years now, and all our visitors have enjoyed coming to stay here, but we need our local airport open....so please UK, fly to Balaton.

Missing The Ryanair Balaton Route!!!!
The Balaton flights were always full, punctual, the airport was well run and really near to the favourite holiday destinations. It took 50 minutes from landing to swimming (Lake Balaton or Heviz). I called Ryanair customer centre - which was a call centre in Romania. The staff had no clue that Balaton airport existed and were extremely unhelpful and rude. I even asked to talk to a supervisor but he was unable to tell me how to obtain information from Ryanair why Balaton disappeared from Ryanair's timetable. Would anybody know?

Balaton Abandoned By The Irish
Balaton airport was always such a nice place to land after the hustle and bustle of UK airports it always felt like a home from home. The staff, even security were pleasant and it's so close to where we wanted to be. I'm almost positive there was some family link between a Ryanair boss, this airport and the much hyped and hugely overpriced golf development at Zala Springs, one can only assume something went wrong there (I imagine the prices!) they really did think they would be able to rip people off and to spite them Ryanair pulled out of airport. They promised to run a summer service but I don't believe they had any intention to do that. This all seems very personal. The flights always seemed pretty full, if not completely full whenever I travelled. A lot of people who bought property there are very annoyed with Ryanair (me included). It prevented me from buying a property in that region, some of my friends did buy and are now furious, I hope another carrier steps in as I'm sure it's a profitable route. Shame on you Ryanair.

Balaton 3 Star - Ryanair 0
I am also disappointed that. Balaton isn't up and running for us Brits who have houses around the lake. I liked using the airport and the staff were very friendly. My grumble is with Ryanair. The flights were always full so can't understand why they aren't flying into there and I was prepared to put up with the tacky announcements they flooded the plane with, just to only be 50 mins from the house. I returned via Budapest on Thurs with Easyjet who are good carriers but the drive did take longer than normal as the Romanian lorry drivers slowed down to see a crash on the other side of the M5 motorway! Also they have changed the times out of Gatwick so came out from Luton, otherwise you are driving late into the evening. I wish a decent customer friendly plane operator would open up at the Vesprem airport.

Travel To Lake Balaton
The worst thing is that neither Ryanair nor Balaton Airport have made a formal announcement about this, so that many of us have been fruitlessly trying to book for April, (when the airport was supposed to re-open) only to find we cannot! If you can hire a car at Budapest airport with a Sat Nav system it should only take you an hour and a half to drive from there to the Lake. Of course it depends on where you want to be on the Lake, we have a house on the east end of the north shore so we have the advantage. However, it should under no circumstances take 5 hours to drive from Budapest to any part of Lake Balaton. There is also the train. Trains from Budapest Deli stn are slow but very frequent, and cheap. The line is being fully electrified, at last, so soon they should speed up. I am very disappointed about Ryanair's typically cavalier attitude, both to its customers and to the airport which presumably fitted itself out for passenger services largely because Ryanair chose to patronise it. But nothing better should be expected of Ryanair. And there is another airport being built at the east end of Lake Balaton, planned to open next year. I was always very fond of Saarmelleek - poor signposting I know, but charming and very helpful airport.
