The Airport
An Airport was never built. It was surveyed during WWII for an emergency airport but because it was only eighty~ miles from Sault Ste. Marie none was ever constructed. My father used the largest lake, Deer Lake, on the island, east side a little more then half way up to the north, to land his LA-4 amphibian on, however the interior of the island is scrub and mostly bog not easily hiked. A small cabin was build on the shore of the big lake adjacent to the interior lake used as a "airport". It has long since collapsed into junk. My father, Roys A. Ellis Jr. owned the island for a number of years selling it to the, I believe, Mellon Conservation Trust in the early 1980's.
