Passenger Treatment
Having returned from Antigua 4 days ago I feel that I must comment on the very poor standards maintained at VC Bird. Firstly we are told that 70% of the island's income is derived from tourism. If this is the case why do the immigration and emigration staff treat us all as potential criminals, terrorists or drug smugglers. I was particularly annoyed by the behaviour of an emigration official, who at the security desk shouted at me " What is your postcode". It was not a polite request. The bottom half of the immigration / emigration form was thrust under my nose and a pen virtually thrown at me with the instruction to fill in the form. When I examined it I noted that I had completed the form correctly and the postcode was indeed present, a fact pointed out to the surly official. The form was grabbed back without a word of apology. Having retired from business some 7 years ago I had always been taught that customers are always a nuisance, but they have one and only one redeeming feature, they pay the wages. The officials seem to forget that if they had no tourists, they would be out of work. It does appear however that with these officials that they are demonstrating the well known effect of giving power to someone of limited intelligence. It is the airport staff that have finally forced me to make the decision not to visit their island again. The island is beautiful, the people (airport staff excepted) are friendly and the hotels are delightful but the airport is a national disgrace, even the PA system is unusable and although the airport tax has just gone from $20 to $28, I doubt if a decent set of video screens will be fitted to provide flight information. In summary , if you want a very poor airport experience, go through VC Bird. If any VC Bird official reads this I will be happy to identify the very rude staff member.
